Fang Zhi was appointed CEO of Nexen in April 2014. Fang has considerable operational and technical depth as well as a very strong understanding of the Nexen organization, having been directly involved in integration efforts as an active member of the Integration Steering Committee.
After graduating from university in 1982, Fang held positions of increasing responsibility within CNOOC over the course of his 30-year career, including experience at BP as a reservoir engineer trainee and Deputy Director of Geological & Geophysical Studies at CNOOC China Limited Shenzhen until 1997. He then moved on to the CNOOC-Amoco Liuhua Joint Operating Group in the role of Deputy General Manager.
Fang has spent much of his career as leader of CNOOC International, a subsidiary of CNOOC Limited which oversees all non-domestic exploration and production activity including assets in Africa, South America and Australia. Other roles have included General Manager of CNOOC China Limited Shenzhen Branch, the President of CNOOC Southeast Asia Ltd., the Vice President of CNOOC Limited, and General Manager of International Cooperation Department of CNOOC Limited, leading CNOOC Limited’s international business.
Fang received his MBA from the University of Birmingham in the UK, and is a professor-level senior engineer, with more than 15 years of dedicated reservoir engineering experience.
