On August 16 2015, the Western Canada Summer Games (WCSG) came to a close following ten days of athletic competition, cultural showcases and family fun in Fort McMurray. Behind the scenes, Nexen’s contributions to the event were numerous and had an impact on the Games' success.
In February 2015, Nexen announced that we would be a presenting sponsor of the WCSG. Nexen was the exclusive sponsor of the opening ceremonies which took place on August 7 under the brand-new CNOOC-Nexen canopy at MacDonald Island Park. The ceremony was a massive celebration, featuring a cast of over 350 performers, big-rig trucks, ATVs, flying stunt motorcycles and explosive fire effects.
“The Games were absolutely amazing,” says Cindy Amerongen, Nexen’s Manager Community and Consultation, and Games board director. “Wood Buffalo put on technically perfect and culturally relevant and inclusive events at a world-class level. Nexen played a huge role by providing financial support, leadership and vision for sports and culture, sponsorship of venues, and employee volunteering.”
In addition, Nexen supported the Triathlon that took place August 12 through 16 in Anzac, the closest community to our Long Lake oil sands facility. Athletes competed in races and time trials that included a 750 metre swim, 20 kilometre bike and 5 kilometre run.
"We consider one of Nexen’s greatest contributions to be the employees who reached out to volunteer for this event in support of their community," says Cindy. "Nexen's 49 volunteers contributed a total of 1,042 hours to support everything from VIP hosting, to security, medics, and score tracking. Their efforts were widespread and far reaching – and they had fun too!"
