The expertise of our people is what drives Nexen’s success. One of our top priorities is to ensure that we have the technical talent to support all our operations. Leadership and our employees themselves have told us that we need to do more in terms of developing career opportunities that attract and motivate technical staff. Enter the Technical Talent Framework (TTF), a career development process that empowers our technical staff to increase their skills and knowledge.

“Helping employees to advance their knowledge, professional development, and careers is important to Nexen, and we’ve heard from our leaders and our employees that it is very important to them,” says Jim Arnold, Senior Vice President of Oil Sands and a member of the Technical Executive Council for the TTF.

Phase one of the TTF process involved engineers and geoscientists who, along with their immediate supervisors, assessed the employee’s technical skills against a detailed structure of function-specific competencies developed by experts from across the business.

The results of the assessment are used to create targeted individual development plans aimed at accelerating the careers of our technical employees. Results also help managers identify strengths and gaps within teams including hidden talents of team members that may not have been revealed otherwise. At the organizational level, assessment results inform development of impactful global training initiatives to ensure Nexen has the technical skills required to deliver on our strategies.
