Jim Arnold
Senior Vice President, Oil Sands

In his role as Senior Vice President, Oil Sands, Jim is responsible for overseeing Nexen’s current and future oil sands projects – assets that contain an estimated 1.6 billion barrels in proved plus probable reserves and between 2.7 billion and 5.8 billion barrels in contingent resources.

Current priorities include ramping up production at the Long Lake oil sands, an integrated steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and upgrading operation that uses a proprietary OrCrude™ technology as well as hydrocracking and gasification to produce premium synthetic crude oil.

Production at Long Lake in 2012 averaged 31,100 barrels of bitumen per day. A cross-business focus on operational excellence has resulted in more comprehensive operating procedures and training, which benefited reliability and environmental performance. Jim is leading the development of bitumen production at Kinosis – a SAGD lease about 12 km from Long Lake.

Jim also oversees Nexen’s 7.23% investment in Syncrude Canada oil sands mining and upgrading facility and our 25% working interest in the Hangingstone SAGD joint venture with Japan Canada Oil Sands. Through his efforts, Jim is also ensuring Nexen is strategically positioned for future in-situ oil sands development, with land holdings in a number of Athabasca prospect areas including operated leases at Leismer and Cottonwood and non-operated leases at Meadow Creek, Corner and Chard.

Prior to working at Nexen, Jim worked at OPTI Canada Inc., where he held a variety of senior roles including Chief Operating Officer and Project Director for the upgrader. Jim holds his professional engineering designation, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba in 1982. Jim is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), the Association of Professional Geologists and Engineers of Saskatchewan and the Canadian Heavy Oil Association.

In his spare time, Jim enjoys motorcycling, photography and travelling with his family.
