Alan O'Brien
Senior Vice President, General Counsel & Secretary

Alan was appointed Senior Vice President, General Counsel & Secretary in November 2012, a role that is accountable for legal, security, health, safety and environment and social responsibility.

Alan started with Nexen in 2002 as a result of the sale of EnCana UK to Nexen and then later was appointed as Vice President International Legal responsible for international legal including teams in Calgary, UK and Yemen. He was also accountable for all UK commercial, security and government relations matters.

Prior to joining the company, he held progressively senior positions in legal, company secretarial and commercial affairs in other international energy companies – Eni, LASMO and Marathon Oil UK. He has worked in a number of overseas jurisdictions including Colombia and Italy.

In 2013, Alan was named the Western Canada General Counsel of the Year, due to his work on CNOOC Limited’s US$15.1 billion acquisition of Nexen, which closed in February of that year.

Alan was admitted as a Solicitor to the Law Society of England and Wales in 1982 and completed a Master of Business Administration from the Henley Management College in 1999. Alan is married and he and his wife have two grown children.
